10 Warning Signs a Website is Fake or a Scam
May 16, 2026 · 5 min read
Scam websites are getting more sophisticated — but they still share the same telltale signs. Here are the 10 red flags to watch for.
Brand new domain
Check when the domain was registered. Scam sites are almost always less than 90 days old. Real businesses have years of history.
Suspicious domain name
Watch for typos, extra words, or unusual TLDs like .xyz, .top, .click, .shop. Legitimate businesses use .com, .co.uk, .org.
No HTTPS
If a site doesn't have the padlock and HTTPS, never enter any personal or payment information.
On Google's phishing list
Google Safe Browsing maintains a database of known scam and malware sites. If a site is flagged here, it's dangerous.
Server in an unexpected country
A shop claiming to be UK-based but hosted in Russia or China is a red flag.
Missing security headers
Legitimate websites configure browser security protections. Most scam sites don't bother.
Prices too good to be true
If a site is selling iPhones for €50 or designer bags for €20, it's a scam.
No contact information
Real businesses have a physical address, phone number, and verifiable email. Scam sites often have none.
Poor spelling and grammar
Professional businesses proofread their content. Scam sites often have obvious errors throughout.
Pressure tactics
'Only 2 left!' or 'Offer expires in 10 minutes!' — these are designed to stop you thinking clearly.
